Doolen Middle School Bands

Thanks to the TUSD’s innovative Fine Arts department, we have received the funding and tools for a great music computer program called SmartMusic.  SmartMusic is an exciting interactive program that provides students the opportunity to play along with recordings of different styles, practice their band music, listen to recordings of different styles of music, record themselves, among many other great applications.

I’m pleased to announce that the district has provided for one subscription for every band and orchestra student to use at home.  This includes one start-up CD-Rom to download the program and a SmartMusic microphone that works with both Macs and PCs.  These materials are available to the student through Mr. Thompson and will be due dates for return to school.  We have limited materials for student use so it is important that students return CDs and microphones by Wednesday May 6th so we can make sure to have enough for next year; students who fail to return materials will be fined by the school ($5 for a CD-Rom and $20 for a microphone). If the student has his/her own microphone to use at home, he/she does not need to check out a school microphone.

For those students who do not have a computer & internet connection at home, TUSD has provided a computer in Doolen’s Fine Arts wing exclusively for the use of SmartMusic.  A microphone will be provided and those students without a computer at home can use SmartMusic on this machine during specified class times. 

Whether or not your family has a computer at home, please complete the SmartMusic Information and Checkout form and return it to Mr. Thompson.  All students must check out a CD-Rom and/or SmartMusic microphone by filling out the attached checkout form and return it to Mr. Thompson.

The program is downloadable from the website, and can be activated with the username and password provided to the student (who has turned in the SmartMusic Information and Checkout form) from Mr. Thompson.

On the SmartMusic website, you'll find a link to SmartMusic Impact. Once your account is activated, find Doolen and your sign up with your class to get information on what's going on in your band class!
